Help Inform Others
One of the biggest challenges of stopping the spread of aquatic nuisance species is informing the public. Studies show that participants in outdoor activities will take action to prevent the spread if they know what to do. Each of us can do our part to tell others.

As Individuals:
You can either call or email your friends and outdoor acquaintances about the threat of aquatic nuisance species and how to avoid letting these harmful species hitch a ride with you. Tell them to
check out this web site. Also help them understand the general procedure for avoiding the introduction of nuisance species. If you want to stay informed, sign up for the free email updates.

As Clubs/Organizations:
Clubs and organizations can do a lot to spread the word about Aquatic Hitchhikers. The following list includes some ideas your club or organization can act upon to inform others about the Aquatic Hitchhiker problem.
  • Newsletter/Website: If your club has a newsletter or web site, you can use these as vehicles to inform your members about the issue and the preventive steps they can take. Rather than creating a new page with this information, you can link to the campaign's web site. The electronic address is: www.protectyourwaters.net
  • Awareness Weekend: Work collaboratively with a marina or by yourself at a public boat ramp to hold an awareness weekend to show boaters how to appropriately clean and check their boats, motors, and trailers.
  • Monitoring Activities: You can also help out by staying alert for unknown species.
  • Exhibits: Display the "Stop Aquatic Hitchhikers" banner and pass out materials on aquatic hitchhikers at sports shows, county fairs, or other exhibit opportunities. Also talk with individuals about their responsibilities if they visit America's waters.

As Media/Press:
To protect our water resources, it is important that the media/press help spread the word on what recreational users of the resource can do. Press Information is located on the site and can be copied off or downloaded. We do not have full rights to all of the photos throughout the site. Photos that can be used are located in the press section and may be downloaded. Also,
clip art of the logo and the General Procedures can be downloaded. If you want to write a detailed article, we can help put you in contact with a variety of sources to interview. If you want to stay informed, sign up for the email updates.

As Guides/Charter Boats:
As a guide or charter boat captain, you have access to numerous anglers. Let them know the status of the lake you are fishing. If it contains aquatic nuisance species, talk to them about what has happened to your lake/river/bay as a result. If the area you are fishing is a pristine one, tell them how important it is to keep it that way. Provide them a brochure on aquatic hitchhikers and encourage them to follow the procedures every time they visit a body of water.
