Suspected Quagga Mussel Found in S. Utah

July 26, 2010 -- The long-feared first case of an invasive, troublesome and costly exotic mussel is suspected at Sand Hollow Reservoir in southern Utah.

Scuba divers trained to look for mussels and hired by the Washington County Water Conservancy District found a 2-centimeter adult mussel Friday on a boat dock at the popular reservoir near Hurricane.

State wildlife biologists believe it is a quagga mussel, but the animal is being sent to a laboratory in Colorado for a determination. Read the full story to get the details.

"If it is an adult quagga mussel, there is a good chance more of them are in the reservoir,” said Doug Messerly, the regional supervisor for the DWR, based in Cedar City. “And if that’s the case, that’s bad news for boaters, anglers and water users. We are working closely with Utah State Parks and the Washington County Water Conservancy District to develop short- and long-term plans to contain and manage the problem."
