Invasive Species Triggers Difficult Debate
July 22, 2010 -- Finding common ground on federal invasive species regulations will be difficult, the U.S. Coast Guard’s chief of environmental standards said Thursday in Duluth.
“We will do our best to minimize the impact on commercial vessels,” Commander Gary Croot told Duluth Seaway Port Authority commissioners. But some non-maritime parties are calling for stringent ballast water discharge controls that are difficult to measure, much less attain.
Croot, past captain of the Port of Duluth-Superior, said more than 3,000 comments have been submitted in reaction to the 2009 federal notice of rule making. Read the full story to get the details.
