Cut the Carp

July 19, 2010 -- CRAIN'S CLEVELAND BUSINESS EDITORIAL -- After looking on helplessly for three months as one ecological disaster has unfolded in the Gulf of Mexico, President Barack Obama finally may be realizing it would be a good idea to head off another from developing in the Great Lakes. Or so we hope.

Little did we know when we were writing our “Carp crapshoot” editorial for last week's issue that Gov. Ted Strickland and Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray were doing some writing, too. Read the full story to get the details.

"While it is always an admirable goal to find the best, most precise solution to any problem, in this case it is entirely impractical,” they wrote. “By the time we identify a better solution to the permanent physical barrier, if there is one, it will be too late. We cannot tolerate further delays in the construction of a physical barrier, nor maintain the current "study and monitor' status quo as the only solution."
