Lake Champlain Protection Campaign Targets Boaters

May 19, 2010 -- Boaters will likely be to blame if a tiny but potentially devastating foreign critter, the spiny water flea, invades Lake Champlain, a new report concludes.

The half-inch-long crustacean with a long barbed tail is knocking at the door. The flea reproduces in such huge numbers it can foul fishing lines, displace native species and may make it more difficult for young fish to thrive. Read the full story to get the details.

"A six-month study commissioned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service office in Vermont reached a different conclusion this month: It is possible, but unlikely, the flea can survive a trip down 60 miles of rivers and canals. More likely, the spiny water flea will reach Lake Champlain on boats moved from one lake to the other without being properly cleaned."
