'Great Lakes are Under Assault from Foreign Invaders'
February 01, 2010 -- The Great Lakes are under assault from foreign invaders according to Jennifer McKay, policy specialist with Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council in Petoskey.
More than 186 non-native species have entered the Great Lakes, costing millions of dollars and irreparably damaging the Great Lakes ecosystem. McKay presented “Aquatic invasive species from a policy perspective,” the second topic in the council’s “Icebreakers” series Thursday.
“In the Great Lakes, we have never been able to eradicate an aquatic invasive species,” McKay told nearly 20 attendees. “Prevention is the most protective and cost-effective way to prevent damage to the Great Lakes.” Read the full story to get the details.
