Prevention Awareness
Club meeting program on STOP AQUATIC HITCHHIKERS
Schedule a program at one of your club meetings on STOP AQUATIC HITCHHIKERS to help inform your members of the STOP AQUATIC HITCHHIKER messages. Obtain copies of the STOP AQUATIC HITCHHIKERS sticker and provide copies to members. If possible, make copies of the www.protectyourwaters.net home page, and general prevention pages and handout to members so they can follow along and have the information to refer to after the meeting.

During your presentation, talk about:
  • how your members can help prevent nuisance species from ruining the waters you enjoy,
  • the negative impacts that nuisance species can cause,
  • the general guidelines recommended by STOP AQUATIC HITCHHIKERS to prevent the transportation of hitchhikers,
  • the specific guidelines that apply to your recreational activity.
Make copies of (and or read) the STOP AQUATIC HITCHHIKER Pledge and have members verbally pledge that they will follow the guidelines each time they visit the water. Keep a list of members who have made the pledge.

Extended Ideas. Take a leadership role in your community to help educate youth and adults on protecting your lakes, ponds, reservoirs, rivers, streams and coastal areas. See other club activities for ideas. Brainstorm ways you can participate and develop a plan to carry out your goals.

Learn more about nuisance species and what to look for. Have club members volunteer to learn about one nuisance species and report on that species for 5 to 10 minutes at the club meeting. Have a different member report on a different species for each meeting.

Awareness Weekend & Cleaning Demonstrations
If you have a well visited boat ramp and/or trail into a water body, consider having club members hand out the STOP AQUATIC HITCHHIKER Sticker. Choose a day that works for the majority of your members. Be sure to check with your state fish and wildlife agency or owner of the boat ramp (i.e. Corps of Engineers, private marina operator) for regulations that might apply and or permits needed to pass out/or educate others on their property. Also check with your state fish and wildlife agency for training that might be available on how to educate others on the aquatic nuisance species prevention solutions.

Help boaters and other recreational users inspect their boats, clothing, and other equipment for mud, plants, fish or animals.

Help them understand all the areas of their equipment that could hold water and encourage them to drain the water before they leave the area.

Displays
Have a club display on STOP AQUATIC HITCHHIKERS. As part of your display at outdoor (boat, fishing, travel, RV) shows, county or state fairs, or community events, include information on STOP AQUATIC HITCHHIKERS. Banners are available through this site. Handout the STOP AQUATIC HITCHHIKER Stickers and ask individuals to make the pledge.

Presentations to other clubs in your area
If you know of other clubs in your area that utilize the resource, offer to speak to their club on how their members can get involved in the STOP AQUATIC HITCHHIKER movement. For example if your club is a fishing club, consider talking with scuba diver clubs, boating/yachting clubs, youth clubs and other related clubs in your area. Provide a similar program as designed for your own club, passing out the STOP AQUATIC HITCHHIKER sticker, making them aware of the www.protectyourwaters.net website, having them accept the pledge and encouraging the club to make a commitment as a whole to get involved in protecting your waters. Follow the presentation guidelines mentioned in your club meeting presentation.

Detection and Monitoring
Your club members can adopt a body of water and become the eyes for it. See the Detection section for details.
